What it shows
Element samples show the contrast between metal and non-metal elements, as well as solid, liquid, and gas elements.
Setting it up
Here are some of the elements that are available: copper, sulfur, lead, iron, tin, aluminum, antimony, iodine, carbon as powder and graphite sample, mercury, oxygen balloon, chlorine, bromine, and iodine gases in sealed off glass tube; ampules of alkali metals.
There is a bin of the elements in the prep room. Place the specific elements requested on a tray with gloves and safety glasses.
The elements can be shown using a document camera. Some elements may be passed around in smaller classes if the sample is safe to handle. A compound can also be shown in contrast to an element.
